BRWMG Compost Workshop

I am so inspired after yesterdays compost workshop, with the possibility of 450 tons of compost being produced by Food Skil. Met Simone Dilkara who project managed the Groundswell composting project in NSW and Pam Pettival who runs Chysalis Landscapes consulting in NSW. Very interesting and cant wait to get composting!

Food Skil gets started-2 & 5 Fresh Food Markets at Cloverdale Communty Centre

Food Skil’s Vision

“To improve access to affordable, sustainable, fresh and healthy food to the people of Corio and Norlane.”

Food Skil officially commenced operation on 1 July, 2011 with Katharine Drummond-Gillett and Susan Tattersall working out of Workskil’s Corio office.

Food Skil will be a sustainable commercial market garden and fresh produce supplier/retailer designed to address food insecurity and provide education around nutrition and healthy food choices. It is Workskil’s first social enterprise.

“Food security exists when all people, at all times, have physical, social and economic access to sufficient, safe and nutritious food which meets their dietary needs and food preferences for an active and healthy life. Household food security is the application of this concept to the family level, with individuals within households as the focus of concern.  Food insecurity exists when people do
not have adequate physical, social or economic access to food as defined above.” (FAO, 2003)

Corio and Norlane have only three major supermarkets and two fresh fruit and vegetable outlets. Food Skil will operate as: An organic market garden, a community food hub and the ` 3& 5’ Fresh
Food Markets (these will operate at Neighborhood Houses).

The `2& 5’ Fresh Food Markets will provide small community run markets where the residents of Corio and Norlane can access affordable high quality fresh fruit and vegetables. The produce markets will be called `3 & 5’ to reflect the recommendations of 2 servings of fruit and 5 servings of vegetables a day

The `2 & 5’ Fresh Food Markets will provide:

  • Fresh fruit and vegetables to be sold through the Markets held at Cloverdale Community Centre.
This will be supplemented with produce from the Market Garden once it is established.
  • Free deliveries-At the end of the markets, purchases will be delivered for free for those unable to take them home.
  • Unsold food will be donated to local food relief organisations.
  • Organic waste will be composted on site.
  • Education on nutritional food choices and cooking skills

Local producers will also be approached to supply produce.

The market will sell various fresh food products including:

  • Fresh fruit and vegetables
  • Set price boxes e.g. $35 weekly box of fruit and vegetables for a family of four or $25 for singles.  (This will be cheaper than buying the products individually.)
  • Produce from local producers, who will pay a fee to have a stall
  • Produce from other social enterprises, who will operate their own stalls and pay a reduced fee
  • Produce from backyard producers, who will have their fee waived.

Education

The market will also feature cooking demonstrations using seasonal fruit and vegetables.  Recipes will be available on the day.  These will be low cost healthy meals

Health promotion activities will be run at the market.

The market will provide a free monthly newsletter; this will contain recipes, gardening tips and information on the produce. It will also list other community food events.

The produce markets will hopefully begin sometime in October. Should you wish to enquire about a stall or have any questions regarding Food Skil can made to Katie or Susan at:
